With over 4,000 athletes from more than 170 countries taking part this year, it’s difficult to imagine that the Paralympic Games has its roots in a small, unspectacular sporting competition held on the lawns of an English hospital in the summer of 1948. The event had been organized by a German doctor who worked at the hospital. He has since become known as the “father of the Paralympics”. His name? Ludwig Guttmann.
