Pragmatics and the Language Classroom

In this short article I first say something about pragmatics and about communicative competence before arguing that all too often we teach language without recognizing that our real job is to teach the use of language. After saying a little about each of English as a lingua franca, language teaching methodology and pragmatics, I address the issue of how we can change as teachers and what we can do in our classrooms to help our learners to become pragmatically competent.
